Cam has over 12 years of legal experience from working in both large and small organizations, as well as in private practice. He possesses a broad scope of business law expertise in general commercial and contractual matters, energy and natural resources, acquisitions and dispositions, and procurement, and has spent his career providing practical business advice to his clients. He is called to the Bar in Alberta.
Cam obtained his Bachelor of Commerce with Honours in Finance from the University of Ottawa in 1996. He continued his education at the University of Victoria where he earned his LL.B. in 1999. Additionally, he completed a Certificate in International Management at the Amsterdam School of Business.
At the beginning of his legal career, Cam spent five years with top-tier firm Bennett Jones LLP in their Calgary office. Here he gained experience in conducting mergers and acquisitions, obtaining transaction approvals required under the Competition Act and Investment Canada Act, and drafting and negotiating energy industry agreements and other contracts.
From 2004 to 2007 he moved in-house at Shell Canada Limited where he worked in the Upstream legal team, providing support to the company’s conventional oil and gas exploration and production business unit. In this role, he provided legal support to the development of major multi-jurisdictional energy projects, conducted asset acquisitions and dispositions, and negotiated and drafted contracts with businesses, government, First
Nations and private landowner counterparts.
Cam joined PetroBakken Energy Ltd., an intermediate Canadian oil and gas exploration and production company, in 2012 as their Corporate Counsel. Here he provided legal support to PetroBakken and its successor companies Lightstream Resources Ltd. and Ridgeback Resources Inc. in Calgary, as well as to a related South American oil and gas company. His responsibilities included proposing and implementing contract structures, providing advice on all contract types (including natural resources agreements, procurement contracts and IT licensing), and managing external disputes.
Cam joined Simplex in February 2018.
I have a young family at home, and commitments and interests outside of my work. I was looking for a professional platform that is accommodating of more flexible, non-traditional approaches to legal practice, while still offering dynamic and challenging work with interesting people. I also believe that now, perhaps more than ever, business clients in Calgary and elsewhere could benefit from new and improved, more flexible service models and value propositions from their legal service providers. I enjoy being a more integrated part of a client’s team, which I think improves a lawyer’s ability to provide better, more practical advice. I also like the wide variety of work that is typically conducted by in-house counsel. Ideally, the in-house counsel role and structure avoids the misalignment of interests created by the billable hour.
