Patricia Brister

Senior Legal Counsel

Who she is

Patricia (Trish) Brister has over 20 years’ experience in the practice of law in the areas of construction, energy, general corporate/commercial and commercial real estate.  She has done a significant amount of transactional work in acquisitions and divestitures ranging from $2 million to $500 million, in addition to documenting tax-driven reorganizations.  She has managed employment, occupational health and safety and other litigation-related matters and has delivered training to field personnel and senior executives across Canada and in the United States in contract risk management.

How she got here

Trish obtained her Bachelor of Commerce degree (with distinction) from McGill in 1983.  She continued her education at the University of Victoria thereafter, completing her Bachelor of Laws in 1987. Trish completed a Masters in Law at the London School of Economics in 2020.

Trish articled and practiced at Bennett Jones, before gaining industry experience in investment banking, followed by land, marketing and environmental, safety and regulatory affairs in exploration and production companies operating in Canada and internationally. She returned to private practice at a large regional firm, followed by a national firm before joining a construction company as senior legal counsel in 2009. Following that company’s expansion into the United States, Trish joined Simplex in 2014.

Interview with Patricia Brister

What is it about this type of practice that attracts you?

By practicing as in-house legal counsel you aren’t left with a feeling that you are “on the outside looking in”. You are working with your clients to advance the interests of the corporation on terms that reflect their culture and values. You feel their day-to-day operational pressures and have an opportunity to make their lives simpler and more secure by supporting them. There is no shortage of challenging work, learning opportunities and people to work with.

How do you think you make a difference for clients' with Simplex's offerings?

The Simplex model allows clients to access legal support on whatever terms make sense for their business. We can assist them onsite, on a 9-5 schedule or remotely, on an as-needed basis, subject to whatever their budgetary requirements may be. Our lawyers are senior practitioners, with experience in a variety of disciplines acquired at top-tier law firms, who are able to hit the ground running and provide meaningful support with no oversight.

Patricia would love to hear from you
