Senior Legal Counsel
Who he is
With extensive private practice and in-house experience, Marc has consistently provided valued, sought-after legal and business guidance in the energy, petrochemical and financial services industries. Ask clients and they will tell you that one of Marc’s strengths is being a highly inclusive and collaborative business and legal partner.
It is an effective approach with a demonstrated success rate. “I always try to see the other side’s point of view, as it often gets the client to the best outcome more efficiently, thus saving the client precious time and money,” Marc says. “There’s a time and place for everything, but it can’t always be about pummeling the other side into submission. When you get a result that works for both sides, it’s common sense; Everybody wins, the parties build up trust, which strengthens their relationship, meaning you are much less likely to have any disputes which they cannot resolve amicably.”
After several years in private practice focused mostly on financial transactions in the energy sector, Marc moved into Senior Counsel and Chief Legal Officer roles in both large and start-up businesses. “It was a great opportunity to get deeply involved in these businesses,” he says. Knowing a business inside and out and being able to add value by solving complex problems with practical guidance and solutions is what he enjoys most. “It’s more than just assessing and solving legal issues,” he says. “A lot of what I do involves strategic thinking and business planning, using valuable experience gained over many years to see around corners and prevent key issues before they arise, rather than reacting to them after the fact.”
In his spare time, Marc likes to travel, sample new restaurants, and try new wines or variations on his favourite cocktails. At home, Marc and his spouse are busy with their four English Bulldogs.
How he got here
After graduating in law (LL.B.) at the University of Alberta, Marc went into private working on corporate and commercial transactions. Over the years, he developed expertise in financial services at major national firms in Calgary, acting for large Canadian banks on oil sands project financings and representing corporate borrowers and lenders on financial transactions and acquisitions. In 2008, he moved in-house, eventually serving as senior counsel for GE Energy Financial Services in Vancouver where he led all project financing and project development activities in Canada. He returned to Calgary in 2015, first returning to private practice before taking up a new role as Chief Legal Officer for an Alberta-based and sustainability-focused petrochemicals start-up. In 2020, Marc brought his talents to Simplex Legal to serve as Senior Legal Counsel.
