Dispute Resolution and litigation management

“A lawyer’s job is to advocate for the clients’ interests, but to be effective, you have to look at both sides of the story,” says Bryan McHale about his approach to practising law. “Having that perspective can help anticipate legal problems before they are a problem.”
Trained as a litigator with a focus on employment law and tort law, Bryan has since expanded his practice to business advisor roles.
Having himself run his own business, Bryan combines an entrepreneurial approach to advising clients with a goal of understanding the big picture. “Learning how to run a business was very valuable, and I came out of it with a deeper understanding of both the employee’s and the employer’s perspectives, and why those differences are so significant.”
Bryan brings creative thinking to his clients, an aptitude he also pursues on the theatre stage and the screen, an interest he has developed while practicing law. “I enjoy the challenge of acting and exploring characters and imaginary circumstances in ways different than in my real life,” he says.
Raised in Fort McMurray, went to university in Edmonton and practiced law in Calgary and Vancouver, Bryan now calls Calgary home. Away from the office, he enjoys heading out to the mountains to enjoy hiking, cross country skiing, mountain biking, or a casual cruise on his paddleboard with his family.
After graduating with a B.Sc. in genetics and then a law degree (LL.B.) from the University of Alberta, Bryan has been in private practice for over a decade, with specialization in employment law, tort law, and insurance defence. He launched a microbrewery business in 2017, which he built from the ground up, brewing award winning craft beer in Central Alberta. In 2021, he returned to his law practice as Senior Counsel at Simplex Legal.
